What is prayer?

Prayer is the opening of the heart to God as to a friend. Not that it is necessary in order to make known to God what we are, but in order to enable us to receive Him. Prayer does not bring God down to us, but brings us up to Him.

Steps to Christ (SC 93.2)

What Prayer Really Is

Prayer is the breath of the soul, the channel of all blessings.

Review & Herald, October 30, 1900, Art. A, par. 1

Through sincere prayer we are brought into connection with the mind of the Infinite.

Steps to Christ (SC 96.3)

Jesus Himself, while He dwelt among men, was often in prayer... And if the Saviour of men, the Son of God, felt the need of prayer, how much more should feeble, sinful mortals feel the necessity of fervent, constant prayer.

Steps to Christ (SC 93.4)

Prayer
Prayer is a Necessity

No man is safe for a day or an hour without prayer.

The Great Controversy (GC 530.2)

The darkness of the evil one encloses those who neglect to pray. The whispered temptations of the enemy entice them to sin; and it is all because they do not make use of the privileges that God has given them in the divine appointment of prayer... The adversary seeks continually to obstruct the way to the mercy seat, that we may not by earnest supplication and faith obtain grace and power to resist temptation.

Steps to Christ (SC 94.2)

Neglecting to Pray

We must be much in prayer if we would make progress in the divine life.

Testimonies for the Church (5T 161.4)

There is no place for us to rest in a careless attitude. We must never forget the warnings of Christ, “Watch unto prayer,” “Watch, ... and pray always.” A connection with the divine agency every moment is essential to our progress.

Testimonies to Ministers (TM 507.2)

Prayer is a privilege

Our heavenly Father waits to bestow upon us the fullness of His blessing. It is our privilege to drink largely at the fountain of boundless love. What a wonder it is that we pray so little! God is ready and willing to hear the sincere prayer of the humblest of His children, and yet there is much manifest reluctance on our part to make known our wants to God. What can the angels of heaven think of poor helpless human beings, who are subject to temptation, when God's heart of infinite love yearns toward them, ready to give them more than they can ask or think, and yet they pray so little and have so little faith? The angels love to bow before God; they love to be near Him. They regard communion with God as their highest joy; and yet the children of earth, who need so much the help that God only can give, seem satisfied to walk without the light of His Spirit, the companionship of His presence.

Steps to Christ (SC 94.1)

Prayer Group

...if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Matthew 18:19-20

How do we pray?

When Jesus was upon the earth, He taught His disciples how to pray. He directed them to present their daily needs before God, and to cast all their care upon Him. And the assurance He gave them that their petitions should be heard, is assurance also to us. (SC 93.3)

This, then, is how you should pray:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13

Keep your wants, your joys, your sorrows, your cares, and your fears before God. You cannot burden Him; you cannot weary Him. He who numbers the hairs of your head is not indifferent to the wants of His children. (SC 100.1)

The Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

James 5:11

His heart of love is touched by our sorrows and even by our utterances of them. Take to Him everything that perplexes the mind. Nothing is too great for Him to bear, for He holds up worlds, He rules over all the affairs of the universe. Nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for Him to notice. There is no chapter in our experience too dark for Him to read; there is no perplexity too difficult for Him to unravel. No calamity can befall the least of His children, no anxiety harass the soul, no joy cheer, no sincere prayer escape the lips, of which our heavenly Father is unobservant, or in which He takes no immediate interest. (SC 100.1)

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds

Psalm 147:3

Jesus heals

There are certain conditions upon which we may expect that God will hear and answer our prayers. One of the first of these is that we feel our need of help from Him. He has promised: (SC 95.1)

I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground.

Isaiah 44:3

Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, who long after God, may be sure that they will be filled. The heart must be open to the Spirit's influence, or God's blessing cannot be received. (SC 95.1)

Our great need is itself an argument and pleads most eloquently in our behalf. But the Lord is to be sought unto to do these things for us. (SC 95.2)

Ask, and it shall be given you.

Matthew 7:7

He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Romans 8:32

What are we to pray for?

God is too wise to err, and too good to withhold any good thing from His saints that walk uprightly. Man is erring, and although his petitions are sent up from an honest heart, he does not always ask for the things that are good for himself, or that will glorify God. When this is so, our wise and good Father hears our prayers, and will answer, sometimes immediately; but He gives us the things that are for our best good and His own glory. God gives us blessings; if we could look into His plan, we would clearly see that He knows what is best for us and that our prayers are answered. Nothing hurtful is given, but the blessing we need, in the place of something we asked for that would not be good for us, but to our hurt.(1T 120.2)

What stops prayers from being answered?

We are so erring and short-sighted that we sometimes ask for things that would not be a blessing to us, and our heavenly Father in love answers our prayers by giving us that which will be for our highest good—that which we ourselves would desire if with vision divinely enlightened we could see all things as they really are. (SC 96.2)

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

James 4:3

...And that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring...

Numbers 15:39

If we regard iniquity in our hearts, if we cling to any known sin, the Lord will not hear us; but the prayer of the penitent, contrite soul is always accepted. When all known wrongs are righted, we may believe that God will answer our petitions. Our own merit will never commend us to the favor of God; it is the worthiness of Jesus that will save us, His blood that will cleanse us; yet we have a work to do in complying with the conditions of acceptance.

Romans 8:32

When our prayers seem not to be answered, we are to cling to the promise; for the time of answering will surely come, and we shall receive the blessing we need most.(SC 96.2)

Every saint who comes to God with a true heart, and sends his honest petitions to Him in faith, will have his prayers answered. Your faith must not let go of the promises of God, if you do not see or feel the immediate answer to your prayers. Be not afraid to trust God. Rely upon His sure promise: “Ask, and ye shall receive.”(1T 120.2)

We must have faith!

When we do not receive the very things we asked for, at the time we ask, we are still to believe that the Lord hears and that He will answer our prayers...

Steps to Christ (SC 96.2)

Another element of prevailing prayer is faith... (SC 96.1)

He that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive

Matthew 21:22 & Mark 11:24

For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Mark 11:23

If ye have faith, and doubt not,... it shall be done.

Matthew 21:21

The more earnestly and steadfastly we ask, the closer will be our spiritual union with Christ. We shall receive increased blessings because we have increased faith. Prayer (Pr 310.2)

Be Persistent!

Perseverance in prayer has been made a condition of receiving. We must pray always if we would grow in faith and experience. (SC 97.2)

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.

1 John 5:14

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer.

Romans 12:12

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.

Colossians 4:2

Peter exhorts believers to be “sober, and watch unto prayer.” 1 Peter 4:7. Paul directs, “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6. “But ye, beloved,” says Jude, “praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God.” Jude 20, 21. Unceasing prayer is the unbroken union of the soul with God, so that life from God flows into our life; and from our life, purity and holiness flow back to God. (SC 97.2)

Pray early and earnestly!

But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find Him, if thou seek Him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

Mark 11:23

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.

Psalm 63:1-5

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

Proverbs 8:17

Pray for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit!

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:33

Trust that God will provide for our needs and instead pray for His Holy Spirit to dwell in us.

The heart must be emptied of every defilement and cleansed for the indwelling of the Spirit. It was by the confession and forsaking of sin, by earnest prayer and consecration of themselves to God, that the early disciples prepared for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. The same work, only in greater degree, must be done now.

Testimonies to Ministers (TM 507.1)

Holy Spirit
Pray for others!

Our prayers are not to be a selfish asking, merely for our own benefit. We are to ask that we may give. The principle of Christ's life must be the principle of our lives. (Prayer (Pr 307.2)

Not for Himself, but for others, He lived and thought and prayed.

Prayer (Pr 304.1)

The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.

Matthew 20:28
